Exploring the Commonplace

Walls

Wall 1

I’ve noticed a common thread in my photographs over the past few months: walls. Walls are one of the most common elements in the human landscape. I find them very intriguing. One can sense mystery, fear and envy when you’re out looking in. There’s a sense of safety along with a defensive or reactionary fear when on the inside (gated communities, etc.). Most of my photographs are taken outside looking at and over the top of walls. Some pictures glimpse things that jut up to give us some tantalizing hints of what’s “in there”. I’ll explore these elements and will be posting new and some older photographs of walls to kick things off here.

The wall in the picture above holds in a metals scrapyard in Minneapolis. Walls always attract graffiti around here and this one is no exception. They’ve tried to clean it off, but a hint remains. The green tree and blue sky are on the other side of the wall.
