Ordinary Pictures

Exploring the Commonplace

About

Hello and thank you for visiting my photoblog. My aim is to share some images, thoughts about them and about photography in general.

In the title, I use the word “ordinary” in its broadest sesne, i.e. that which is commonly encountered. It’s those things we pass by constantly and don’t really notice. I try to give attention to those things that maybe don’t get all that much of it.

Just to get it out of the way, I mostly use digital these days, but still produce film images when I feel the need. I use a Leica M8 for digital and both a Mamiya 7ii medium format camera and an Arca Swiss 4×5 for film-based photography. I really don’t feel there’s any real difference between digital and film as far as the mental process goes, so you probably won’t find any diatribes one way or the other here. I use what I feel comfortable with and what seems most appropriate to the situation at hand. I do tend to use the 4×5 for classical landscapes and the M8 or Mamiya for more contemporary images.

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the US. We get winter here from October through April, so many of my pictures are winter themed and may seem rather bleak to some. I prefer to think of them as just winter photos, though–”bleak” is in the eyes of the beholder. But, the long winters only heighten the enjoyment of the leafy seasons, so you’ll see plenty from those seasons, as well.

At any rate, enjoy the pictures. Feel free to leave comments.

Cheers,
Tom Westbrook
